The origin of the word Cutty Sark?

The Word Cutty in Scotland / Northern Ireland means “Short”.
A Sark is an item of clothing, a nightdress. Together the name means “Short Undergarment”. 

Robert Burns, the great poet, used the name Cutty Sark in his epic poem Tam O’Shanter, which depicts the life of the drinking classes in the old Scotch town of Ayr.

"roars out, "Weel done, Cutty-sark!" And in an instant all was dark: And scarcely had he Maggie rallied, When out the hellish legion sallied."
