Baedeker Air Raids: London’s Darkest Hour in 1942

Canterbury ww2

On this day during the Second World War in 1942. The Germans launched the biggest air-raid since the Battle of Britain. The target was Canterbury.

The German Luftwaffe switched targets from London, switched tactics to coastal town hit and run raids and switched to a campaign of targetting English targets which were to become known as the “Baedeker raids”.    Targets were selected from the “Baedeker guidebook” 3 stars and above, hence why the Raids were named after the book.
