WW1 Virtual Tour The Remembrance Art Trail – Mark Humphrey

Artist Mark Humphrey in association with the Royal British Legion, with help Royal Engineers, put on a World War One Art Trail for the 2018 Centenary celebrations

The exhibition was part of the 100 centenary celebrations at the end of World War One in 2018. Read on for the virtual tour.

Art Piece No 10 – Every One Remembered

A tall glass like a pyramid with a statue of a soldier inside and poppy petals periodically blowing in the wind.

If you come out of the Main Jubilee line station, where Reuter’s plaza and electronic matrix board are on your right and the walkway in front being Jubilee Plaza you immediately before the water before the DLR in the background crossing the water, will see Art piece No. 10

Opposite Art piece No 10, next to the Jubilee station Jubilee Park. 24 soldiers stand to attention. A World War One interpretation of the Terracotta Army.

Art Piece No 2 – Lost Soldiers

Continue through to the back and exit out of Jubilee park look towards your left across the road, you will see the next art piece No Helmets on stilts.

Art Piece No 3 and 4 – Jutland Capsule, Life Blossoms Again

From Art Piece No 2 with the Jubilee park behind you and the helmet installation on your right walk away from the Military Helmets, Upper Bank street. Walk past the back of the Jubilee Tube station. But it will show the layout of the streets. You will pass and cross South Colonnade that runs across Upper Bank Street. On the right-hand side on Upper bank street, you will see the outside of Waitrose. You need to head into the store and down into its basement which flows out into the underground shopping mall to find Items 3 and 4. Once inside and outside Waitrose facing the mall Boots is on your right, and on your left head past the chocolate shop first item is in a glass cabinet in the wall on the right-hand side. Continue along the corridor to find the next item.

Art Piece No 4 – Life Blossoms Again

If the mall and escalators are too confusing. Go back up to the street level to stand outside Waitrose on your right will be the North Colonnade the road that runs ahead and on your left the south colonnade. Either will take you in the direction towards the DLR Station. They will take you past the pyramid tallest building of the complex One Canada Square.

Options, once you come out of One Canada, head towards items 6 and 5 and come back to the main road North Colonnade.

We can find item 6 on the lower staircase by the impressive water feature that sits below the Crossrail foot overhead tunnel walkway. The exhibit is Red propeller and wheel hubs.

Art Piece 5 – ANA

Once at the North Colonnade, walk in the direction away from where you just came, keep on the straight road of the north Colonnade it will take you to the DLR station. If this is blocked the road that runs parallel to it the South Colonnade will take you in the same direction.

If you need a food shop Tesco Metro has a useful one by the Platform area where the trains that head towards Bank leave from. This can be approached by heading down into the mall, that lies underneath the DLR station. Take the escalator up to Tesco. Take the escalator down again to walk through the mall to the end a short distance and you will see the water fountains outside. This is Cabot Square Item 7 is there. Alternatively, stay on either North or South Colonnade to the end till you see the water fountains of Cabot Square. Behind you will be the vista of One Canada Square tall pyramid building.
