Balham during the Blitz

Balham Tube station receives a direct Bomb hit during the Blitz

The underground network served as air raid shelters during World War 2.  Balham Tube station was one of the stations on the network that was deep. Just past 22:00 on the 14th October 1940 a 1400kg fragmentation bomb fell on the road which blew a huge crator. A London Bus then subsequently fell into this whole, no one on the bus was killed. The image became one of the most iconic images of the London Blitz.
